Summer Course 2016

The 2016 Summer Course will be at the Landesakademie für Jugendbildung, Weil der Stadt, Germany. The cost is £695 and a deposit of £95 is required to secure a place following a successful audition. Places must be confirmed by Monday 6th June. Applicants should be 12 years of age by the date of the tour. The course dates are 31st July to 6th August 2016 plus travel time at either end of the course. This will be confirmed as soon as the travel arrangements are finalised.

At our Summer Course, players are allocated to various ensembles. The training ensemble, NYTRO, is intended for players of a good Grade 5 standard and above. Progression to NYRO is not automatic and is entirely dependent on performance at the annual audition. NYRO is intended for players of a minimum Grade 8 standard. However, examination success is not the only criterion: the audition is the main measurement for selection and capable and experienced players without grade passes are fully encouraged to apply. BlockWork is a one-to-a-part ensemble by invitation only (based on performance in the audition).

Auditions must be live and unaccompanied. Candidates are required to play one or two set studies, sent out approximately one month before the confirmed audition date. For NYRO, one of these must be played on a bass recorder. Candidates must also offer two contrasting pieces of their own choice, one on their chosen instrument and one on treble. Own choice pieces should have a total duration of approximately 6 minutes. There will also be a short sight-reading test. A warm-up room will be available. All candidates will receive a brief written report. Following a successful audition, candidates will be offered a place for either NYTRO or NYRO. The Musical Director’s decision is final.

Auditions for the 2016 course will take place at our Recorder Days around the country apart from the London Recorder Day, which takes place after the closing deadline. The audition fee is £25, which also entitles the candidate to attend the Recorder Day free of charge if they are auditioning at one of these events.

A non-refundable deposit of £95 will be required in order to secure a place following a successful audition. This will be deducted from the full course fee of £695.

We are aware the cost of the course is higher than usual and we regret that we are not able to offer financial assistance in the way of bursaries, but we suggest that students might like to raise funds towards their course cost or make application to local organisations who might be prepared to offer grants for course abroad.

Please note that numbers are limited on the 2016 course and therefore early application is advisable.

The final date for completed applications and auditions is Sunday, 5th June 2016 and places must be confirmed and non-refundable deposits paid by Monday 6th June.

Because this course takes place outside the UK, we ask that applicants should be 12 years of age by the date of travel.
